The Ultimate Guide to San Juan Capistrano Wedding Venues

Wedding Venues

If you’ve been touring Orange County venues and everything is starting to feel like the same space with a different carpet, this is your sign to drive twenty minutes south.

San Juan Capistrano is one of those towns that doesn’t need a design concept forced onto it. The Mission has been standing since 1776, the Los Rios District is the oldest residential street in California, and the whole place is built out of adobe, brick, arches and bougainvillea. The venues here come with a point of view already built in. Your job is picking the one that fits your guest count, your budget and the kind of night you actually want to have.

We’ve planned weddings in San Juan Capistrano for years, so here’s our honest version… not just what’s pretty, but what each venue is like to actually work at.

Franciscan Gardens

Franciscan Gardens is the one people picture when they think “San Juan Capistrano wedding,” and for good reason. It’s about 5,000 square feet tucked into the historic downtown, with an outdoor courtyard garden for the ceremony and an indoor space framed by original brick walls and chandeliers for the reception. Two on-site suites mean you’re not getting ready across town.

What you need to know: catering is exclusive through 24 Carrots, which is genuinely good news. They know the space, the food is consistently excellent, and the logistics are smooth because nobody is learning the building on your wedding day. We planned Tara and Will’s November wedding here and the flow from garden to brick room is exactly as seamless as it looks in photos.

Best for: couples who want that intimate, romantic, “we found this place” feeling. Ask about your exact guest count early; it’s a cozier footprint than the resorts and popular dates go quickly.

Serra Plaza

If your guest list is bigger but you still want the Spanish colonial feeling, Serra Plaza is the answer. It’s hidden in the Mission District and hosts weddings of up to 250 guests across four spaces: a fountain courtyard, arched alcoves, a draped breezeway the bride walks through to the ceremony, and indoor rooms for dinner and dancing.

Catering is exclusive through Jay’s Catering. Same principle as Franciscan Gardens: an in-house team that knows the venue means fewer surprises.

Best for: couples with a larger guest count who want an all-outdoor, old-world feel without leaving Orange County. Think about your ceremony time carefully with any open courtyard. Ask the venue where the shade falls at your ceremony hour, especially for a summer date.

Inn at the Mission

The Inn at the Mission is the newer hotel option in town and it’s the one to look at if you want a true hotel wedding weekend. Ceremonies happen in the Olive Grove, receptions move into the 3,000-square-foot Los Olivos ballroom, and there’s a second option with the Catalan Room and its Landmark Courtyard, complete with Spanish tile. Your guests can stay on property and walk across the street to the Mission the next morning.

What you need to know: this is a full-service hotel, so expect hotel-style contracts. Food and beverage minimums, room block conversations, and vendor load-in rules will all be part of the picture. None of that is bad. It’s just a different kind of paperwork than a standalone garden venue, and it’s exactly where having a planner in the room during the pricing conversation pays for itself.

Best for: couples with a lot of out-of-town guests, or anyone who wants a welcome party, wedding and farewell brunch all in one place.

Marbella Country Club

Marbella gets overlooked by couples who assume “country club” means dated, and that’s a mistake. The Catalonia Room has a fireplace and high ceilings that take drapery beautifully, and it seats 150 all on one level, or up to 200 with a tiered layout across the grill and terrace. Outdoors, think bistro lighting or a tented setup with chandeliers. It’s polished, it’s private, and it photographs like a Mediterranean villa.

Best for: couples who want an elegant, controlled environment with plenty of room and a slightly more classic aesthetic.

Mission Basilica for the Ceremony

If you’re having a Catholic ceremony, Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano is one of the most beautiful churches in Southern California, and it puts you within minutes of every reception venue on this list. Plan your transportation carefully. The window between a church ceremony and cocktail hour is where timelines go to die, and a shuttle or a classic car (yes, we’ve done that) keeps things on track.

What to Ask Before You Book Any of Them

A few San Juan Capistrano-specific things we’d flag on every tour:

Curfew. Most outdoor venues in town wrap by 10pm. That’s normal for Southern California, but if you’re picturing a 1am dance floor, you need to know before you sign.

Sound restrictions. Historic districts have neighbors. Ask about amplified music limits and whether a band or DJ has played there before.

Weather. This is inland enough to be warmer than the coast in summer and cooler at night in fall. We plan for both. Ask about heaters, shade and the real rain plan, not the one that only works for 80 guests.

Parking and shuttles. Downtown parking is limited on event nights. Build the shuttle into your budget from day one.

Why We Love Planning Here

San Juan Capistrano does a lot of the design work for you, which means your budget goes further on the things guests actually experience: the food, the music, the moments that feel like you. If you want a wedding that looks like California instead of a ballroom that could be anywhere, this is the town.
